This past week I got the chance to interview the lovely and inspiring creator behind Soul Journey Designs. Apryl Dawn is a rock star mom, entrepreneur, designer and yoga teacher. She has created a life that is dedicated to spreading and sharing everything that she loves. Here she shares with us what keeps her motivated, balanced and inspired.
Name: Apryl Dawn
If you had to define all that you do in a title, what would you say?
Can you describe your philosophy about yoga?
I believe that yoga goes so far beyond the physical aspect of the asana. This is where most of us start, but soon find how it fits into all aspects of this human existence. It becomes life if you let it. That’s what I love about it. There is a facet for every human, at any point, in any and all person’s life. Yoga is on and off the mat, and after over 13 years of practice, I see more now how it is off the mat for me on a daily basis.
Can you describe your philosophy around your jewelry design?
I started creating jewelry for me, because I couldn’t find “spiritual” jewelry with a trendy focus. I soon found out that there was more than just me seeking this, and that’s how the growth started. I’ve stuck to the philosophy of “wearing your spirituality” and creating only jewelry that I would wear, because then there is that passion put into every piece. I combine my love for yoga and jewelry, and the outcome is always authentic and inspired.
How did you turn your passion into the profession you have today?
I started wearing my creations while teaching yoga and to classes, and was soon asked to carry my line in the studio I was teaching at. From there, and word of mouth, I was soon asked to provide pieces in local boutiques and other yoga studios. It was definitely a serious learning process, but I stuck with what I knew I wanted to be, and when you fuel that with passion, you will always create success. Instagram has also been a huge tool of success. I have my little “Vibe Tribe” going on there, and it’s an amazing place to create connections from all over the world. Whoever invented it was a genius, and I thank them!
Who or what gives you the most inspiration?
This sounds so cliché, but my son has inspired me more than any one person in this world. I’ve been a single mom for almost 3 years, and he inspires me to be the best version of me. I want him to know that mama did everything she could to provide the best life she could for him, and I want nothing more than for him to grow up and be proud of me. When I hear those words from him one day, I know life will be as full as it can be. It makes my heart explode to live for someone else in that way. It’s the most selfless thing I’ve ever done.
What’s your favorite quote or mantra you cant live without?
I get stuck on certain mantra’s every few months or so, and right now it’s “Om Shrim Maha Lakshmiyei Swaha” . Its an abundance mantra to the goddess Lakshmi. It’s suiting in this time in my life as I’m going through a shift and growth within my business. I chant it throughout the day, every day. It brings abundance in all forms, whatever you are requiring in that time in your life. What we focus on expands, so I try to keep my thoughts focused on my path, and mantra is my main source for that focus.
Can you tell us what your typical day looks like?
I am proud to say that one of my biggest accomplishments in life was to build a life around no alarms, and I get to start every day when I want. Most of the time it involves a cuddly 4 year old crawling into bed, and I get at my emails and social media first thing in the morning. We get ready within our own time and then once I drop him off at daycare it can be lead to so many different outcomes. Sometimes I come straight home to create, other days its meetings, collaborations, jewelry drops, packaging orders, and I try to always fit in a “sweat date”, whether that’s yoga, gym, spin or anything else. Keeping my body active, calms my mind to be able to take on the curve balls of being a mama entrepreneur.
What are you most proud of when it comes to the business you have built?
I am so proud of everything that has happened. I truly stun myself almost weekly. I am seriously humbled by where I have got to, and I believe that staying humble is key. Always expect the unexpected, good or bad, because both will happen. It’s how you ride the waves. My biggest “biz moment” was definitely being asked to participate in the Emmy’s 2015 Style Lounge this year. It brought amazing connections and growth for Soul Journey.
What keeps you motivated to keep creating and teaching?
It’s a certain crazy drive for success that I think entrepreneurs embody. There is no fail, there is only success, and from that you find the path. There can’t be fear, there can’t be boundaries, there can’t be borders. When you get that taste, you only want more. It’s truly carnivorous, which is funny coming from a vegetarian.
How are you able to stay balanced with running your own business and being a mom?
Aaahhhh, this is the never ending battle! I’m tired…a lot. I work when I can, so that means late nights, weekends, early mornings. When I am with my son, its all him, 100%. I have found that we do better when I can set aside all things work and just be present with him, and if that means he goes to bed and I put in another 4 hours of work, I do. We don’t have cable, and I try and keep our home life fairly simple and complete so that there isn’t distraction when it’s us, because at the end of the day, these are the moments I want to remember.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Barefoot on a beach, still dreaming and creating. Finally realizing a dream of less work hours and more time with the people I love. Living life and getting what I truly want from it. Simple, complete, and full of so much love. Soul Journey will still be there in a huge way, I’ll have created a business that I run, not one that runs me. I want more time to smell the roses as they say, and this time will be there in the future.
How can people learn more about what you have coming down the pipeline?
My favorite place to release new designs and announce workshops is Instagram! Follow me @souljourneydesign.
I hope you enjoyed getting a glimpse into the life of Apryl Dawn.
