“Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory” ~ Dr. Seuss
This is the quote you’ll find on Brenna Herbert’s Instagram description and it suits her perfectly. Passion interjected with humor and a seize the day kind of attitude, Brenna’s spin classes at YYC Cycle are described in the same way. She’s an authentic, inspirational magnet and we couldn’t resist finding out more about this #HEMMSFEMME.
Being frank, just taking a spin class is tough! What made you decide to become a Motivator at YYC Cycle?
Oh it definitely wasn’t an automatic decision after trying my first class that’s for sure! I seriously never thought I would be able to do something like this. It wasn’t until I really connected with some of the other motivators and heard what they had to say about it changing their fitness outlook and being such a transformative process that I really started to get excited about it.
I was looking for a challenge in my life and this opportunity came at the perfect time for me to test my own limits and get out of my comfort zone.
What was it like going through the YYC Cycle Motivator training? Biggest challenges and discoveries?
The motivator training is where the journey really started for me. I still didn’t really understand what I was getting myself into when I first started.
I’d say the biggest challenges were really opening up and being vulnerable to a group of strangers at that time. Talking about your biggest fears about becoming a motivator, what brought you to this moment in your life, and then first getting up on that bike and trying to lead your very first track were all difficult for me. But it was through experiencing these crazy moments of insecurity that the most powerful growth occurred.
It made all the difference going through it with a group of like-minded individuals who all came from different places in life but shared this unshakable bond that will now be with us forever ☺ I met some pretty incredible people who I am thrilled to say are now some of my best friends.
Have you always been involved in fitness?
I would have to say that fitness has evolved for me drastically over the years. I used to be heavily involved in sports when I was younger, specifically soccer and field hockey. But as I grew out of those competitive teams focusing more on school and work, I definitely found it difficult to maintain fitness as a priority in my life. Spin helped me rediscover my passion for working out again for sure. I think when you find an activity you love, you are able to achieve goals; not only just physical, but also mental ones that you didn’t even know you had.
How would you describe your philosophy as a fitness leader?
I read a blog post recently from a member of the Bikergang who said that some of his biggest personal successes and breakthroughs have happened while in the spin room at YYC Cycle. Reading this honestly made me feel so special and honored that I could possibly be part of that moment for someone.
Whether you’re making major breakthroughs or tiny shifts in attitude, I think being able to lead a group of people in a positive direction is something pretty incredible. That’s why I do it, every time I get up on that platform.
Who (or where) do you derive inspiration from?
I get inspired by lots of different things.
Music is definitely a trigger for me and always has been. I started singing at a very young age and still love a good karaoke stage every now and then! ☺ Music has an amazing ability to transport your thoughts, provoke feeling and heal the soul.
I also always get inspired by the people in my life; my boyfriend, friends and family. I think it’s important to have people in your life that challenge your decisions, thoughts, or feelings on a regular basis. Defending your ideas is what makes them stronger.
How do you keep things fresh while staying true to your mission/vision/values as an instructor?
Honestly I think this is the biggest challenge of being a motivator. I really do think that the music helps make a spin class what it is. If people are able to escape into the music in some way, I think the experience is that much more elevated. How I like to keep things fresh is by staying current with music, always trying to bring in new hits, remixes, and artists to the spin room.
If you could tell a person new to spin 3 things what would they be?
- Don’t be intimidated.
- Be open.
- Have fun!
You’re a stylish babe, what is your go-to workout style?
Fitness fashion is growing like mad right now! I love that working out has become another platform to express your personal style and individuality (even though I sweat like crazy and leave class looking like a drowned rat regardless of what I am wearing! haha).
I am really into the baggier tops that you can tie up – paired with some trendy leggings with different textures (ie. mesh!). I also love high neckline tops and absolutely anything camo ☺
What are some of your favorite pieces that you’ve purchased from HEMM (or your favourite brands that HEMM carries?)
I LOVE the Bowie Top by Strut This – I have it in two colors… And the Pineapple Party leggings by Goldsheep - I mean come on… how can you not?!
What pieces are you currently coveting from HEMM?
I have five items in my cart right now:
